Posted on March 15, 2012

The possible side effects of marine phytoplankton

Marine phytoplankton are fast becoming the next big thing in the health sector with many pharceutical giants and health experts attributing quite a number of health benefits and cures to marine phytoplankton. This has led to an increase in the number of health supplements and other such products claiming to possess the same attributes as the sea organism.

Even with the attributes and heakth benefits of these organisms that are mostly found under ocean and sea water, one cannot take away the possibility of side effects resulting from the usage of the product especially as regards the supplements that are said to be made from it.

It is worth noting that even as there have not been any known particular adverse effects or reaction as a result of using the marine phytoplankton, the possible side effects briefly highlighted below before totally embracing the marine phytoplankton syndrome.

Mistreatment of cancer

Just like many other such natural treatments to various diseases, it is of great importance that users of marine phytoplankton especially those that intend using it as a cure for cancer take caution as they use it.

It might be counter-productive to totally discard conventional treatment as a result of using the natural phytoplankton treatment of cancer.

Toxins from marine phytoplankton

This is another major possible side effect that should be considered when using marine phytoplankton. With studies revealing that majority of the fish and shellfish toxin contaminations originate from phytoplankton, one need to be very careful in this respect as there is really no guarantee that these toxins have been completely removed from the supplement or any other such product.

As mentioned earlier, there have been no identification of specific side effects of using marine phytoplankton but the points mentioned above make it important to carefully consider the alternative before opting for it. This is particularly important when food supplements are involved just like in the case of marine phytoplankton.
